The nuclear family is the building block of American society, and the social, religious, educational and economic institutions of society are designed to maintain, support and strengthen family ties even if the people involved can't stand the sight of one another. [Battered Wives, 1977] ~Del Martin

Pete Carroll shared Greenpeace USA's photo.
Greenpeace submitted nearly 50 Freedom of Information Act requests in the summer of 2010 during the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster for photos and information about the oil spill. These photos by the US Fish & Wildlife Service have not been released publicly until now. They were taken as the oil was hitting the coastline and, in many cases, in areas where the Coast Guard and BP were forbidding independent journalists or citizens from doing our own documentation by boat or air. This image is part of a selection of the 10 oiliest images we found.

Pete Carroll shared a link via Anne Rice. The trial has provided a rare behind-the-scenes portrait of one of the largest Catholic archdioceses in the United States. In addition to the graphic testimony, hundreds of pages of internal personnel files of priests accused of child sexual abuse - some of them confidential - are now part of the court record. And that could have a deeper impact on Philadelphia's Catholic community, according to David Clohessy, director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). "These revelations and disclosures have to help parishioners face the painful reality that, just like victims, they, too, have been horribly betrayed and misled," Clohessy said, "When you see handwritten memos from very smart, high-level church officials, this unambiguous deception and selfishness really cuts through denial.

A very good and true Documentary about Wal Mart! Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant's assault on families and American values. The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a Goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide health care for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins! Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel -- and shop.

Taco Bell Shooting Victim was Holding Leash, Not Weapon
Victim's sister calling for shooter's arrest

LAVEEN - Police are saying more about a shooting at a Taco Bell Tuesday night in which one man died.
They're also identifying the victim as 29-year-old Daniel Adkins.
About 7:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend ordered food at the Taco Bell drive-thru and were told to pull up while their order was prepared.
At the same time, Adkins stepped around a corner into the path of the vehicle and angry words were exchanged between he and the driver.
They got into an altercation and Adkins was shot once by the driver. He died at the scene.
The driver, a 22-year-old black male, called police but has not been arrested.
At first, the couple claimed that Adkins had a metal pipe that he swung at them -- but it turns out he was holding a dog leash with his yellow lab on the other end.
Family members want that driver arrested, but he's claiming self-defense.
"He needs to be behind bars. I'll never see my brother again," says sister Marina Reyes. "If he felt that my brother was threatening him, he could have easily just rolled up the window and called the cops."
A metal pipe or bat was never located. An independent witness did say Adkins swung his fists in the driver's direction.
“He swung his fist towards the driver window, and at some point the driver shot him,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. “Just because we don’t book a person immediately does not mean we don’t charge a person at a later date.”
The dog, Lady, stayed by Adkins' side until the Humane Society came. Adkins lived with his mom and dad. He's 29, but his family says he's mentally disabled and has the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. He didn't drive, and walked wherever he went.
"This person is still on the loose and I don't agree with that. So he's saying self defense, then where's the weapon? Where's the pipe? They didn't find anything on my brother," says Reyes. "He was just too aggressive, you don't need to go that far."
The shooter's name has not been released. The investigation is still ongoing.

OutCry As Transsexual Inmate "Repeatedly Raped" In Prisontransgirls.co.uk
Date 15 Apr 2012 | Views 100
The Southern Poverty Law Center has demanded that the Orleans Parish sheriff in Louisiana immediately take steps to protect a transsexual inmate who has been repeatedly raped and tortured at the Orleans Parish Prison or face a federal lawsuit.
The demand was made in a letter sent to Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman today. It details the violent sexual abuse endured by S.T., a transsexual woman who was gang-raped at knifepoint by five men in one facility for 40 minutes. The Feb. 27 attack occurred was witnessed by other prisoners. Guards failed to protect S.T.
The letter demands that the sheriff transfer S.T. to a safe, secure location where deputies can keep constant watch on her. It also demands that the sheriff provide her with access to a phone at all times, so that she can speak to her counsel about her safety. If the sheriff fails to protect S.T., the SPLC will file suit and seek a temporary restraining order to have her transferred out of the sheriff’s custody.
“All of the jail buildings are all extremely dangerous,” said Katie Schwartzmann, managing attorney of SPLC’s Louisiana office. “The facilities are full of contraband. Deputies provide dangerously deficient supervision and fail to protect individuals who are particularly vulnerable to abuse. These violations resulted in our client being raped for weeks.
”Days after the Feb. 27 attack, S.T. was moved to another building at the prison, where she was raped repeatedly by another prisoner over the course of two weeks. The attacks escalated in severity and frequency, with her attacker breaking one of her teeth and attempting to strangle her. Sheriff’s deputies still failed to protect her.
S.T. was finally transported to a hospital, where test results confirm she has contracted HIV, after enduring almost a month of rapes and sexual torture at the prison. She was HIV negative when she entered the prison.
Inexplicably, after the hospital visit, sheriff’s deputies attempted to return S.T. to the same area where she was repeatedly attacked by one prisoner. Her attacker remains on that floor.
Violence and rape is widely documented throughout prison — suggesting that S.T. will not be safe as long as she is in the sheriff’s custody.
Orleans Parish Prison, one of the largest jails in the country, was investigated by the United States Department of Justice in 2009. The department found alarming levels of rape and violence. The prison has also been the subject of hearings by the Prison Rape Elimination Act Commission. Recently, U.S. Federal Marshals withdrew all federal prisoners from the facility citing concerns about unlawful conditions.

Homeless mother who sent six-year-old son to better school in the wrong town jailed for five years......
A mother who pleaded guilty to fraudulently enrolling her six-year-old son in the wrong school district has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Tonya McDowell sent her son to an elementary school in Norwalk, Connecticut, instead of her home city of Bridgeport.
The 34-year-old, who was homeless when she was charged with felony larceny last year, said she wanted the best education possible for the boy.
McDowell last week entered her plea at Norwalk Superior Court under the Alford Doctrine, which means she does not admit guilt but concedes the state has enough evidence to convict her.
Authorities told the hearing that she used a babysitter’s address to enroll her son in kindergarten in Norwalk when he should have attended schools in Bridgeport, her last permanent address.
Her case drew national attention and support from civil rights leaders and other advocates who wanted the charge dismissed.
McDowell told police she was living in a van and occasionally slept at a Norwalk shelter or a friend’s Bridgeport apartment when she enrolled her son Norwalk’s Brookside Elementary School.
Police said McDowell stole $15,686 worth of ‘free’ educational services from Norwalk.
She also pleaded guilty to four counts of sale of narcotics, which will be included in her prison sentence.
In a separate case, she pleaded guilty on February 7 to selling drugs.
McDowell’s lawyer, Darnell Crosland, said she agreed to accept a plea bargain rather than continue fighting the charges even though she insists she is not guilty.
Mr Crosland said: ‘You shouldn’t be arrested for stealing a free education. It’s just wrong.’
McDowell was sentenced to 12 years in jail, suspended after she serves five years, and five years probation.
IMHO: And Republicans really want to say there is not a war on women? And still no mention on national news of Anna Brown who was murdered in St. Louis, MO six months ago by a hospital and a police department. Are the major Networks being controlled by the Republican Party? Or are they simply Big Business cronies who just don't care about the 99% out here struggling to survive? Where in the hell has justice and compassion gone? It sure doesn't seem to exist in the United States any more.

Earth Day, the annual day of environmental action and awareness, was first held on April 22, 1970. This past April 22nd, we finally ventured into the woods behind our house and pulled 4 putrid truck tires/mosquito farms out of the mud, along with about 200 pounds of scrap metal, engine parts, and farm equipment. The place used to be a dairy farm, and I guess "out of sight" was "out of mind". If it were still the 70's, cleaning up the woods would have been "outta sight" in a whole different way.
Here's a clip of The Crying Indian from the early 70's. OK, so Chief Iron Eyes Cody wasn't a real Native American after all. That didn't stop the ad campaign from having a tremendous effect back then. And it's no less relevant today.

Watching Matilda Klein waiting in the wings to be called forward for her solo performance in this YouTube video, one would never expect the 94-year-old woman to have the energy it takes to be a ballroom dancing star.

HOSPITAL CHAIN’S DEMAND FOR OVER 100 CUTS IN CARE, RN STANDARDS WHILE AMASSING HUGE PROFITS PROMPTS THIRD ONE-DAY RN STRIKE
With the wealthy Sutter Health corporation continuing to demand more than 100 sweeping reductions in patient care and nurses’ standards and workplace conditions, registered nurses at eight Northern California Sutter hospitals will hold a one-day strike May 1, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United announced today.
Some 4,500 RNs are affected by the planned walkout, which will occur at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center facilities in Berkeley and Oakland, Mills-Peninsula Health Services hospitals in Burlingame and San Mateo, Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, San Leandro Hospital, Sutter Delta in Antioch, Sutter Solano in Vallejo, Novato Community Hospital, and Sutter Lakeside.
Despite making over $4 billion in profits since 2007, and handing its chief executive Pat Fry a 215 percent pay hike to over $4 million a year, Sutter is demanding huge cuts for its RNs, many of which would pose risks to patient safety. Since the last strike in December, the corporate chain has refused to modify its massive call for cuts, and at several hospitals imposed reductions in standards for nurses and their families.
“As an RN at Sutter Delta Medical Center, I feel I need to go on strike for the safety of my patients,” said Sutter Delta RN Amy Black. “The medical center is attempting to take away sick leave, vacation time, and education time which effectively forces me to come to work sick, stressed, and not up to date on the latest advancements of my profession.”
In a meeting of CNA’s Sutter Joint Bargaining Council attended by dozens of Sutter RNs this week, a number of nurses repeated their desire to challenge Sutter’s attacks on nurses and patients, voicing support for the next walkout.
“These takeaways represent the greed and misplaced priorities of Sutter in its ongoing pursuit of profits over quality patient care given by the RNs,” said Alta Bates Summit RN Mike Hill. “We will continue to fight the cuts by Sutter and defend our profession and our communities.”
Among the many concession demands at various Sutter hospitals:
“Sutter’s tone at the bargaining table has been dismissive and disrespectful of nurses' concerns,” said Mills-Peninsula RN Genel Morgan. “They have misjudged our resolve to stand up and safeguard our nursing standards, and to ensure our patients don’t suffer from Sutter wanting to cut these standards. Sutter has used half truths and lies to justify its objectives, but we see right through them, much as the community sees through them whenever Sutter cuts services.”
Yet, Sutter is hardly the picture of a floundering small business. Over the past five years, Sutter has racked up nearly $4.2 billion in profits, according to its own audited financial statements. Further, Sutter pays 21 top executives salaries over $1 million, several of them getting pay hikes of over 150 percent since 2005.
“Sutter has passed the stage of ‘too big to fail’ going to ‘too big to care’,” said CNA/NNU co-president Zenei Cortez, RN. “They have shown they are far more interested in amassing wealth than caring about community health or the nurses who provide care for the patients, who are the base of Sutter’s huge profits. Sutter RNs will never accept a reduced voice to speak out for patients, or an erosion in their own standards.”
Sutter’s additional abandonment of communities and patients (partial list):

Among the many concession demands at various Sutter hospitals:
- Eliminating paid sick leave, effectively forcing nurses to work when ill, exposing already frail and vulnerable patients to further infection.
- Forcing RNs to work in hospital areas for which they do not have appropriate clinical expertise, again a safety risk for patients.
- Huge increases in nurses’ out-of-pocket costs for health coverage for themselves and family members.
- Limits on the ability of charge nurses, who make clinical assignments for nurses, to address staffing shortages, subjecting patients to the danger of unsafe staffing.
- Forcing RNs to work overtime, exposing patients to care from fatigued nurses who are more prone to making medical errors.
- Eliminating retiree health plans.
- Eliminating all health coverage for nurses who work less than 30 hours per week.
- Reduced pregnancy and family medical leave, undermining RN families.
Sutter’s additional abandonment of communities and patients (partial list):
- End breast cancer screening for women with disabilities and most bone marrow transplant services for cancer patients at Alta Bates Summit in Oakland and Berkeley.
- Stop providing psychiatric services under contract with Sacramento County for more than 225 Sacramento children.
- Close specialized pediatric care, acute rehabilitation, dialysis, and skilled nursing care services at Mills and Peninsula hospitals in Burlingame and San Mateo.
- Close home health services and limit acute-care hospital stays in Lakeport.
- Close acute rehabilitation services, skilled nursing care, and psychiatric services, and substantially downgrade nursery care for sick children at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley.
- Sharply cut psychiatric care at Herrick Hospital in Berkeley.
- Close a birthing center at Sutter Auburn Faith, forcing new mothers and families to travel up to 100 miles for obstetrics care, while giving a $1 million gift to the Sacramento Kings.
- Close pediatric, psychiatric, lactation, and transitional care services in Santa Rosa.

Another fun day of wandering the web and then sharing my findings. If you all knew how much fun this is for me, you would probably think it's almost sinful! Have a great day, everyone, and keep coming back. It's fun. And I hope also it's.............................thought-provoking, angry-making, educational, maddening, fearful, funny and, most of all, helping us all connect with one another. Some things are just universal and the more we share our commonalities, the better the world will be.
