Wisconsin Republican Claims Single Mothers Want Fatherless Children, Says Women Lie About Planned Pregnancies

Wisconsin state Senator Glenn Grothman is once again attacking women and single mothers. At a time when Republicans are trying to win back voters by denying that they are waging a war against women, Grothman appeared on the Alan Colmes Show and said a number of things that women should find totally offensive. First, Grothman claimed that single mothers want their children to be fatherless. Second, he said that women are “trained” to tell doctors that their planned pregnancies are actually unintended so that they can get an abortion. And finally, Grothman told Colmes that women need to be “educated” to not become single mothers.
GROTHMAN: There’s been a huge change over the last 30 years and a lot of that change has been the choice of the women. There’s a reason why in the 50s and the 60s you had less than ten percent of the births illegitimate, and now we’re over 40 percent. It’s not that there weren’t abusive men in the 40s or there was a problem with child support. It is the popular culture, led by the social service professions, who are saying…
COLMES: Well tell me what you would change.
GROTHMAN: I think the first thing we do is that we should educate women that this is a mistake.
COLMES: You think women need to be educated, are they not smart enough on their own?
GROTHMAN: They do have to be educated, because right now the culture encourages a single motherhood lifestyle.
COLMES: You think women choose to be single moms…
GROTHMAN: Oh absolutely.
COLMES: You think women want to have homes without fathers? You think women look to the opportunity to have to raise kids and not be able to get work because they have to stay home and take care of the kids. Women want to do this?
GROTHMAN: I think a lot of women are adopting the single motherhood lifestyle because the government creates a situation in which it is almost preferred.
COLMES: According to data published in USA Today, at least four in ten pregnancies in every state are unwanted or mistimed. According to the analysis that was released last May, more than half of pregnancies in 29 states and the District of Columbia were unintended, 38 to 50 percent were unintended in the remaining states. This mitigates against the argument that women are purposefully wanting to have kids. Their unintended for the most part. They’re unintended pregnancies, which is the argument for health care services and birth control for women.
GROTHMAN: I think you undersell these women.
COLMES: Undersell them?
GROTHMAN: Undersell them. I think when you have an epidemic of this great proportion, people are not so dumb that it’s surprising when they get pregnant. I think people are trained to say that ‘this is a surprise to me,’ because there’s still enough of a stigma that they’re supposed to say this.

Grothman, like many Republicans, thinks that women should be educated to always stay with the father of their children no matter what. Even if he cheats or is violent. He also thinks women lie about unintended pregnancies so they can get abortions. And if that weren’t enough, he actually thinks all single mothers want their kids to be fatherless. The nerve of this sexist ___ is outrageously offensive. He doesn’t think women are smart enough to make their own decisions, he thinks women ought to be subservient to men, and he thinks women are the ones at fault for being single parents. It doesn’t matter if the father left or died or went to prison, or doesn’t want the responsibility of raising a child, Grothman thinks women are to blame for the single parent household. Just like he thinks that single parenting is akin to child abuse. Even when confronted with the facts, Grothman refuses to back down. These statements are precisely why Republicans are being accused of waging a war against women.

The Vatican reprimanded the largest group of nuns in the United States on Wednesday, saying the sisters had promoted “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith” and remained too “silent” on same-sex marriage.
The New York Times reports on the results of an investigation against the Leadership Conference of Women Religious that began in 2008 by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The conference is based in Silver Spring, Maryland and represents about 57,000 sisters, the vast majority of women in the country’s religious orders.
In its assessment, the Vatican claimed the nuns had “serious doctrinal problems” and failed to submit to bishops, the “authentic teachers” of the church, on issues including the male-only priesthood, homosexuality, and the health care overhaul, which the Catholic social justice lobby Network supported. Network, founded by nuns, was specifically cited in the report for focusing too much on poverty and economic injustice while staying “silent” on abortion and same-sex marriage.
Cardinal William Levada, the former San Francisco archbishop who now leads the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith, has appointed Archbishop J. Peter Sartain of Seattle to lead reforms of the nuns’ conference. Changes will include revision of the group’s statutes, replacement of a handbook used by the nuns, and approval of every speaker at their public programs, according to the Times.
The Vatican has also ordered a separate investigation of all American congregations for religious sisters, according to the Christian Science Monitor. The results of the inquiry have not been released at this time.
IMHO: As a child, I was first taught by nuns and they taught me much, much more than my ABC's and excellent cursive. They also taught me about dignity, about discipline and about never giving up. I had recently become hearing impaired from physical abuse and the Nuns taught me how to read lips. They didn't want me to go to the California State School for the Deaf because they were afraid I would be taught only to sign and not be encouraged to continue speaking. I was only four, but they let me into 1st grade anyway. (No kindergarten in Catholic Schools in those days, anyway.) And I remember well the hours after school was out when I would stay to be taught a much needed new skill - lip reading. During those hours I felt cherished and worthy of the attention I was getting. And they taught me well. By age 6 I no longer truly realized I was hearing-impaired. As long as I could see a person's face and their lips while they were talking to me, I could "hear". The differences between hearing and lip-reading blurred for me to the point that I, along with almost everyone else, forget I could no longer hear well. Amazing women, those Nuns. It makes my heart hurt to see them chastised so severely by the Church they have all served so well. Men are too often cruel toward women without giving it a second thought.

Gun toting - The Constitution is a liberal constitution, and the Second Amendment is not there so that stupid people get to settle their differences using handguns; it's main objective is that the Citizens remain ARMED IN THE FACE OF ALL ENEMIES, INCLUDING A TYRANNICAL GOVT..... so no idiot can arbitrarily declare martial law & turn the US into a military dictatorship.
Liberal - As per JFK's description of what it means to be so. AND...because I'm smart enough to know that small govt = less regulation = more corporate power = no votes for the citizens. It's a no brainer, people.
I am also interested in supporting Grass Roots progressive political movements, not just the biggest parties with the biggest advertising budgets. Love to plug small groups & open up communication.
