What is woman-centered? Is it even a word? Can it be found in a dictionary? What does it mean? Who created the term? Where did it come from?

I first heard the word woman-centered in a classroom. The year was 1987; the class was "Intro to Women's Studies - 101." For some reason or other, I caught myself thinking of that term a few months ago and went immediately to my beloved and treasured computer to goggle. That word is in the Oxford online dictionary:

google Pronunciation: /ˈɡuːɡl/ verb [with object] informal search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet, typically using the search engine Google.

Origin: 1990s: from Google, the proprietary name of a popular Internet search engine

But "woman-centered" cannot be found in a dictionary. At least not in any of the online dictionaries I searched through two months ago. And I found this fact very strange because I had heard the word way back in 1987. I can tell you exactly who said it; it was Professor Bettina Aptheker in the lecture she gave on the first day of my "Intro" class. I was 43, a re-entry student at the University of California, Santa Cruz; a single mother; a lesbian; a disabled student; a pot smoker and poet; a misogynist pig. My actual major was Literature/Creative Writing; I only took the Woman Studies class to get a friend off my back. Really!

I walked out of that first "Introduction to Women's Studies - 101" a very, very different woman from the one who walked in. And now here I am, some 20+ years later at age 67, beginning a blog with the very first topic being about the word (or should I say non-word) "woman-centered."

I decided to make my search simpler and using the same online Oxford Dictionary, I discovered some very interesting definitions:

mankind noun [mass noun]

1 /manˈkʌɪnd/ human beings considered collectively; the human race: research for the benefit of all mankind

2 /ˈmankʌɪnd/ archaic men, as distinct from women.

womankind Pronunciation: /ˈwʊmənkʌɪnd/ (also womenkind) noun [mass noun]women considered collectively: she said she acted for womankind in bringing a sexual harassment claim against him

Interesting. Mankind seems to define all of humankind, while womankind stands only for women collectively. Does that mean men are more important than women? Maybe I should go even simpler, down to the basic "man" and "woman"? I did so and found:

Well, that's a pretty detailed definition of the word "man." Let's see what we get for the word "woman."

Goodness, quite a difference in the depth and breadth of these two definitions. I wonder what impact these definitions might have on today's youngsters of either gender? We all are, in part, what we are taught. Seems to me the teachings in these definitions point to a reality that men are much more important than women. In fact, that is the reality in the United States: men are more important than women. How have we women allowed this to be? Is this the world we truly want? Really?

Martin Bashir, Panel Condemn Rush Limbaugh Over 'Despicable' Sandra Fluke Comments (VIDEO)

Martin Bashir said he was left speechless on Thursday after hearing what he called "idiotic comments" made by Rush Limbaugh about Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown University law student who was denied the right to speak at a controversial Republican hearing on contraception.

Limbaugh, who called Fluke a "slut" during his Wednesday radio show, doubled down on his comments on Thursday.

"So, Miss Fluke and the rest of you feminazis. Here's the deal. If we're going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch," Limbaugh said.

Bashir reread what he called Limbaugh's ludicrous thoughts and asked his panel to comment. Democratic strategist Krystal Ball called Limbaugh "despicable," "disgusting," and a "loathsome individual." She also defended Fluke and said Limbaugh was trying to shame her.

Bashir described Limbaugh as a "peculiar individual" and wondered, "what do you think he means by suggesting that he wants to watch videos of students at Georgetown University using the contraception pill?"

"I have no idea," MSNBC contributor Jonathan Capehart responded. Capehart called the comments deplorable and said he was not going to speculate on Limbaugh's motivations for saying such statements about a college student who was talking about women's health.

"I'm troubled and saddened about the coarsening of political discourse," Capehart said. "There's a way to talk about these things without being hateful...rude or derogatory about people...For him to go down this low road...it's low even for him."

"That's speaking some," Bashir said.

Dear Fellow Members of Unite Against the War on Women,

I know that most of you do not know me, as I don't know you. It's been a little over a week since two women whom I have never met in my life posted a group on Facebook that caught my eye, so I joined. There were less than a 100 people when I joined. I thought it was just going to be another group where I could vent, bitch, and gripe about the systematic political machine that was rolling across this country from state to state attempting to erode women's rights. I was wrong.

That little group I joined has changed my life and my future. I have always been a fierce feminist and defended and supported equality for all no matter of gender, race, ethnicity, or religious affliation. I grew up hearing stories from my grandmother, who I might add was an amazing woman, about the marches she participated in during the 40s, 50s, and 60s for Civil Rights, Women's Rights, and the rights of Union Labor Families. I was raised by a mother who was a child of the 60s and marched in protest of the Vietnam War. I come from a long line of strong fierce women who have done what they could to stand up for themselves, others, and make the changes in the world they wished to see.

Over the years I have worked with several groups from battered women's shelters, rape crisis centers, underserved youth, and environmental groups as well. I have had a longing in my spirit to be able to make a difference in this world and have always felt that there was going to be something in my life that would come along to afford me that opportunity. Little did I know that when I found that little group on Facebook a little over a week ago, that it would be that "thing" I knew to the depths of my soul that I was meant to be part of.

This little group that two brave women started has become one of the fastest growing movements/groups in Facebook's history. We have tapped into a fear, a passion, a longing by women all of this country to make the changes in the world we want for our daughters, our granddaughter, our nieces, and all the future generations of women to come.

This is a historic moment in time. This is a historic moment in our country and ALL of us are part of it. This is more than just a Facebook group, we have become a grassroots women's movement that the likes of which have not been seen in almost fifty years. This thing we are all a part of is more than what most of us truly understand and realize. This thing we are a part of will be written about in history books of the future. We have re-ignited the Third Wave that has been sitting on the sidelines for several decades allowing others to determine our rights, or to take them away. I have said this over and over - they have awakened a sleeping giant.

Women are the ones throughout history who have made radical changes come about. From the abolishment of slavery to the suffragist movement in this country, it is women who have banded together in all of our beautiful diversity and complexity, to change this country.
Right now there are women around the world who have always looked to American women as the "ideal free woman." We have an obligation not only to ourselves and the women of this country but to the women of the world who are watching to see what we will do to protect our rights and defend ourselves.

We have to work together, to make this work. Things are never as easy as we think they are going to be. In the midst of change and progression there are periods of frustration when things that we thought would be easier become difficult. This is the time when we have to strive to work together even harder against our common enemy.

There are times when an organization is growing into a full fledged official organization that things are being worked on beyond the scenes that we do not know about and when the time comes that those things are worked through then the official announcement will be provided to the group. We all have to stay focused and determined to accomplish this monumental task we have all taken on. It will not be easy, but we are capable, fierce, strong women who are changing our country and in essence the world with what we are doing.

So please let's all work together. We each have strong voices and perspectives and we have a common voice against a common enemy. Let's continue our fight together, united as one and not divisive. Fracturing is exactly what the enemy wants from us - division, anger, frustration - because all of those things lead to destruction. We are better than that. We are women. We have endured the brutality and abuse of a systematic marginalization from others throughout time. We are stronger than they are. We have survived. We have endured. We are strong. We are pissed. We are changing our lives and the lives of millions of women around this country and the world.

The subjects can range from healthcare, to pro choice, to gay marriage to education, to religion, to whatever you want...

Then I will string all of these answers together, and create a film with a "CALL TO ACTION" for the 4-28 protests/rallies/marches that are being held in DC and EVERY state. Included in the "Call to Action" with be info on how to register to vote, where to find the information on the rallies, and how to contact you representatives...

Any ideas are welcome. I think the film will be no longer than 3 minutes, but want it to be much shorter.

Also, looking for women of ALL ages, Races and nationalities... I have not talked to anyone Hispanic or Asian, so, if you have any leads, please let me know. This is in the primary stages... so, helping to get cool women together would be a HUGE help.

In Remembrance: Women Who Died from Illegal and Unsafe Abortions

The seven women below are just a small representation of the countless women who have died because they did not have access to safe and legal abortions. Most of these women died before Roe v. Wade offered them a safe alternative. However, women continue to die and suffer injury due to current restrictions that particularly affect young women and poor women. (See pictures at the link)

Our government is now controlled by conservative leaders who are extremely hostile to women's reproductive rights. If more restrictions on abortion are enacted, and especially if Roe v. Wade is overturned, this list of lives cut short could grow to include our daughters, sisters, mothers, best friends, wives, partners, granddaughters and other special women and girls...

Clara Bell Duvall
Dec. 23, 1896 - March 27, 1929
Clara Duvall, her husband and five children (ages 6 months to 12 years) were living in Pittsburgh, Pa., with her parents due to limited financial resources when she learned she was pregnant again. Clara attempted a self-abortion with a knitting needle. Her doctor, knowing she was seriously ill and in severe pain, delayed sending her to a hospital for several weeks. The Catholic hospital where she died chose to list the cause of death as "pneumonia."

Ruth Irene Friedl
Aug. 24, 1901 - Aug. 21, 1929
Denied a legal abortion though her pregnancy was diagnosed as life-threatening, Ruth Friedl attempted to self-abort by drinking a plant poison, ergot apiol. That night at the dinner table of their home in Denver, Colo., with her husband and two small children present, she collapsed and died.

Pauline Roberson Shirley
June 22, 1910 - August 22, 1940
Pauline Shirley and her six children were living with her mother in Arizona while her husband sought work in California. After an illegal abortion, she began to hemorrhage and was hospitalized. She needed massive transfusions. While Pauline's mother searched the community for donors, Pauline bled to death.

Vivian Campbell
December 12, 1925 - May 6, 1950
Vivian Campbell was the mother of two children ages five and three. She was newly separated from her husband when she realized she was pregnant. Sending her children to stay with her parents, she sought and obtained an illegal abortion. She sent for her husband, but by the time he arrived at the hospital it was too late. She died in agony of peritonitis.

Geraldine Santoro
August 16, 1935 - June 8, 1964
The photo of Geraldine Santoro dead on a hotel room floor has become a symbol for the horror of illegal abortion. Gerri, as she was known, lived on her family farm in Coventry, Conn., with her two daughters. At the age of 28, separated from her abusive husband, she became pregnant by another man, Clyde Dixon. Afraid that her husband would kill her if he found out, she and Dixon looked for ways to terminate her pregnancy. With no other options, they attempted to perform the procedure themselves. When the operation went awry, Dixon fled, leaving Santoro behind where she bled to death. A chambermaid found her body the next morning.

Rosie Jimenez
1950 - Oct. 3, 1977
A single mother with a 5-year-old daughter, Rosie Jimenez of McAllen, Texas, was a scholarship student six months away from her teaching credential. She was the first known victim of the Hyde Amendment, which cut off Medicaid funding for abortion to women on public assistance — women who by the government's own definition cannot afford health care. Too poor to pay for the procedure at a private clinic, she died in agony from a botched illegal abortion.

Becky Bell
August 24, 1971 - Sept. 16, 1988
At 17, Becky became a victim of an Indiana state law requiring parental consent for a minor to obtain an abortion. Unable to bring herself to disappoint her parents by telling them she was pregnant — or go before a judge to bypass the law — Becky sought an illegal abortion. When she became seriously ill, her parents rushed her to the hospital. In severe pain from a massive infection, Becky still could not tell them, and despite the efforts of the doctors, she died.

Only 95 years ago on Nov. 15, 1917, Our Grandmothers & their Mothers Picketed the White House & CONSERVATIVES to get the right to vote!

33 innocent women were wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.' 40 prison guards wielding clubs & their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the women who were defenseless. By the end of the night, they were beaten until they were barely alive. Some were chained to the cell bars, hands above head & left hanging for the night, bleeding & gasping for air. Additional affidavits describe the guards dragging, beating, choking, slamming, grabbing & kicking the women.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food-all of it colorless slop, was infested with worms.

One of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, so they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat & poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press. They tried to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane, for fighting to give women the right to vote, but failed.

All of Us, & especially women, need to make sure that they get out & vote, remembering these very courageous women, who fought the Conservatives with their lives, so that women would be allowed to vote today!

DSCC Ad Features Democratic Female Senate Candidates, Hits Republicans For 'War On Women'

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is taking advantage of the controversy over contraception and women's health issues to feature its female office-seekers.

A new ad from the DSCC accuses male Republican candidates for Senate of perpetrating an "assault on women's health and freedom" and focusing on social rather than economic issues.

"It's time to end the culture wars and get to work for the middle class. Time to elect more women to the U.S. Senate," a female narrator says, followed by clips of 11 female Democratic challengers and incumbents up for reelection endorsing the ad.

"Send a Democratic woman to the Senate," the commercial's text reads under portraits of the women. "Send them all."

A recent spotlight on gender issues -- including an all-male hearing on birth control and a number of hotly-contested state abortion bills -- has provided a fundraising boost to Democrats and the pro-Democratic women PAC Emily's List.

The Republican Party has only five female senators, two of whom -- Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) -- are retiring. Republicans have at least three women Senate candidates who are expected to be their party's nominee or have strong leads in their respective primary races.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION: They stole OUR phrase, "War On Women" and didn't even give us credit for it or mention us. Use the form e-mail at http://thewomankindparty.com/important.html E-mail it to every politician you can think of! That e-mail will tell them who we are. We're the women actually fighting the "WAR ON WOMEN." They need to know that. BTW, the numbers on the e-mail are pretty accurate as of today.

Good evening everyone, I thought I would take the time to introduce myself.

I am one of the National organizers working with Karen and Rhonda The membership in this group is outstanding and is growing by the minute. Yet it is going to take a team of people to address the task at hand. We can not do it alone and we need your help, this organization was formed to defend our rights that are under attack from those wanting to send us back to the kitchen barefoot and pregnant!

Are we going to stand for that????

I would say by the growth of this group and National we are answering that question!!!
